contour886 – The Founders

The founders of contour886 started the business in 2003, bringing with them a wide range of experiences and skills and a desire to create a high quality business that they could be proud of, and that was doing something truly worthwhile.

After graduating with a Masters degree in Medical Science, Phil Swann worked for many years as a Clinical Engineer. He specialised in the provision of posture and mobility solutions and developed a reputation as an expert in this field through his work with the NHS and private sector. Phil is a registered Clinical Scientist, a specialist qualification recognising a high level of skill and relevant experience.

Derek Hill was an expert model maker for 12 years, producing a range of products such as children’s toys and prototypes. As well as producing precision models from drawings he was able to use his creative skills and make models from scratch. Derek has always loved making things and coupled with his passion for quality design, he saw the opportunity to apply his skills to the world of custom seating.

Lindsey Read worked for many years in marketing and operations management roles with BT, having started in the graduate programme and progressed to a senior position within the company. She worked on a wide variety of multi-million pound projects in the UK and overseas, learning valuable business skills at every opportunity. In contour886, she saw a great opportunity to apply this commercial experience to an exciting new business.

contour886 – From the early years

Back in 2003 we were the first seating provider to offer every type of seating. We offered customers the flexibility to mix and match (one type of seat and a different type of back) where they had previously needed two suppliers.

The business grew rapidly as our early customers spread the word about us. We soon found that managers from different NHS wheelchair services with whom we worked were working were recommending us to their colleagues in other wheelchair services. They would then invite us in to run a trial clinic and our working relationships would grow from there.

From the start we have recognised the trust that our customers place in us to deliver the right product and a highly professional service. We work with complete honesty and transparency in all our dealings with our customers, and communicate regularly to ensure that there are no surprises at any stage of the process. We believe a key part of our role is making the whole process as easy as possible for everyone involved.

The name

We wanted a name that reflected what we do, but also a name which meant something to us. contour is the essence of what we are doing; moulding the contours of the body to create the perfect support profile. And 886? This is the height of Pen-y-Fan, our favourite mountain in the Brecon Beacons. Its contour lines and peak appear in our logo.
